Looking for a New or Replacement Boiler in ?

Boilers Explained

We know the boiler isn’t generally a choice or luxury purchase and we are sure that you would rather put the money towards a holiday or new car. However if your boiler is in need of changing we do have some helpful ways of funding it and we can help advise on which boiler is best for you and your family’s needs.

So which Boiler is right for me?

Deciding what type of heating boiler will be efficient and fit in with your home and needs can be confusing for a few reasons. We can make general assumptions and therefore establish what kind of boiler you need by looking at what type of system you have already.

In some cases, it may be much more economical to re-evaluate and replace your whole hot water and central heating system you have for a completely new heating installation.

Let us look at a few boiler types.

Combination Boilers

A combination boiler or ‘combi’ is a highly efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single unit. Combi boilers directly heat water from the water main when you turn on a tap, there is no need for a hot water storage cylinder, you don’t even need a cold storage tank in the loft.

Combi boilers are extremely energy-efficient and cost-effective, water is heated instantly rather than being heated and stored in a hot water tank. An added benefit is that hot water is delivered at mains pressure, which means that you could get a powerful shower without the need for a separate pump if the area you live in has decent water pressure.

  • Compact size perfect for smaller homes
  • Ideal where there is little or no loft space
  • No need for a hot water cylinder
  • No cold water storage tank
  • Less pipework making installation cheaper

Heat Only Boilers

Regular boilers (heat only boilers) are suited to homes that have a traditional heating and hot water system which is linked to a hot water cylinder. Heat only boilers need a cold-water storage tank in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder as well as a tank to maintain the water level of the central heating system.

A regular boiler may be the best option for you if replacing an older existing boiler. If your home has an older radiator system, it may not be able to cope with the water pressure that can be delivered using a system or combi boiler.

  • Perfect where a lot of hot water is used at the same time
  • Ideal where there are two or more bathrooms
  • Suited to areas where water pressure can be low
  • Compatible with eco water heating systems for lower energy costs

System Boilers

System boilers need a cylinder to store your hot water, the heating and hot water system parts are built into the boiler unit itself. System boilers don’t need a cold-water storage tank in the loft, so it can be an option in a home with little or no loft.

Some system boilers are compatible with solar heating systems, delivering environmental benefits as well as reduced energy costs.

  • Suited to property with more than one bathroom
  • Consistent hot water to a number of taps/showers at the same time
  • No need for a loft tank, freeing up space and eliminating worries about leaks or frost damage
  • Economical to run
  • Built-in components making for a quicker and neater installation
